The Nicholas P. Fofonoff papers span the years 1961-1994 and include material that covers his years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution during his tenure as Physical Oceanography Department Chairman and Buoy Group manager. Also included are presentations and lectures from classes he taught at Harvard and WHOI.

The Nelson G. Hogg papers consists of materials from 1940-2002, with the bulk dating from 1972-2002, documenting Hogg's work at MIT, NIO, and WHOI. Also included are papers generated by Henry Stommel including a draft of The Sea of the Beholder. The collection, divided into four series, consists of correspondence, publications, cruise logs and datasets, and Henry Stommel's manuscript of The Sea of the Beholder.

Overview The James R. Luyten papers, dating from 1952 to 1993, consist of materials pertaining to the life of Henry M. Stommel. Luyten worked closely with Stommel on many different projects, which are represented by the correspondence and drafts of reports and book chapters contained in this collection. The Henry Melson Stommel papers, spanning the years 1946-1996 with the bulk dating from 1970-1992, reflect the varied scientific interests of Henry Melson Stommel, regarded by some as perhaps the most important physical oceanographer of all time and the founder of the field of dynamical oceanography in the US.
