Biographical Information
Bryce Prindle was born October 23, 1909 in
Brule, Wisconsin. He received his B.S. (1931) in Industrial Biology, and Ph.D. (1935) in Microbiology from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After his Ph.D., Prindle did post-doctoral research in the microbiology of textile fibers at MIT, and taught bacteriology at
Iowa State College. During World War II, he was the Field Supervisor in Dehydration in the
U.S. Army's
Office of the Quartermaster General, where he worked on maintaining production in dehydrated food plants. After the war, he ran the biological research program of the
Plymouth Cordage Company in
Plymouth, MA, which included developing preservation treatments for marine cordage. Later, he was a Professor in the
Division of Mathematics and Science at
Babson College for many years. Prindle was a Visiting Investigator at WHOI beginning in the summer of 1961, and worked most summers until 1995. His early work included the study of biological deterioration on components of deep-sea buoy assemblies and the prevention of buoy line failures. When his studies found indications that fishbite was the cause of many of the failures in the lines, he began studying the problem of fishbite. The material in the papers relates to his fishbite studies. Prindle died on November 25, 1998 at the age of 89.
