Microfilm cruise data collection
Scope and Content Note
The microfilm contain records, dates, and recordings of geophysical data collected on various cruises of the USGS and WHOI vessels. The data was gathered from cruises during the time period of 1947-1995. These cruises collected geophysical data which includes: echo sounding data, magnetic data, heat flow measurements, seismic data, shot data, bathymetric data, continuous seismic profiling (CSP), fathometer tapes, magnetometer records, and velocimeter records. Some of the microfilm also includes Loran logs and transmission logs. Each entry in the series represents one reel of microfilm. Any given entry may not have enough metadata to complete all parts of the entry. Entries are structured as follows: Cruise#:, data description, (data type)Box ID:#, Neg/Pos. Example: Cruise 254:(Bathymetric data / echo sounding)Reel: 155A, Neg.

Historical Information
The Microfilm cruise data collection, 1947-1995 is a combination of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) microfilm archive which was collected and numbered by John Porteous, Research Assistant Geology and Geophysics Department for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the WHOI seismic archive collection. After Porteous retired and his lab closed, all of the microfilm was transferred to the WHOI Data Library and merged into the seismic archive collection.

Custodial History
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Data Archive acquired the United States Geological Survey microfilm from John Porteous when he retired. The United States Geological Survey microfilm collection was tranferred to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Data Library, combined with the seismic archive collection, and stored in two cabinets.

When John Porteous retired this collection was tranferred to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Data Library and Archives and merged with the seismic archive collection and organized by vessel name.
