Administrative History
On May 18, 1992 Craig Dorman announced that he would step down on August 1 after serving 4 1/2 years as the Institution’s sixth Director. Upon the recommendation of the Trustee’s Executive Committee to the Board of Trustees, Robert Gagosian was elected to the position of Acting Director, effective August 1, 1993. Senior Scientist Fred Sayles became Acting Associate Director of Research on September 1. In January 1994, Gagosian was named the 7th Director of WHOI.
Dr. Gagosian had been with WHOI since 1972 and served as the Senior Associate Director and Director of Research before his term as President and Director. During Dr. Gagosian’s term, he fulfilled a seven-year strategic plan for the institution, including the creation of the Ocean Institutes, completed the Quissett Campus redevelopment and new laboratories project, launched the new coastal research vessel, Tioga , and secured funding to replace the 42-year old research submarine, Alvin .

The archival collection of Robert Gagosian, WHOI Director, 1993-2006, was transferred into the Archives after his tenure.
