The Maury Workshop on the History of Oceanography was organized by Gary Weir of the U.S. Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C., and took place from June 11-13, 1997. More than 20 oceanographic historians from the U.S. and Canada gathered in Woods Hole to discuss the workshop's topic, "Hot War, Cold War: The Political and Social Context for Disciplinary Development in Oceanography, 1918-1990." The keynote address was presented by Professor Eric Mills of Dalhousie University.
