Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

Most dives were given separate folders; however, when dives were done in a series, and information was collected for all of them, several dives are included in one folder. Data of many types is included: navigational and scientific data, transcriptions of audiotapes made during dives, and lists of photographs taken. For some dives the files contain a great deal of information. For example, the FAMOUS dives (Dives 518-535) usually have: navigational log, photo and sample logs, Lulu track plots, EG & G calibration sheets, notes, brush records, Alvin navigation log, dive summary, manual x-y plot for edit. Many dives, however, have much less information than this, perhaps only a plotting sheet.

Photographs, videotapes and audiotapes are not included in this series; these are located in the film vault. While data logger tapes and edited punch tapes are a part of these series, they were physically separated for preservation purposes. Unless otherwise noted, there is one roll of data logger tape per dive.

One box of material concerning the Trieste I , a submersible that was used during dives to the Cayman Trough, is maintained in the Archives as a separate collection. ( Robert Ballard was an observer on these three dives that took place June-July, 1977.)

There are also twelve boxes of strip image prints from Dives 518 through 535 arranged at the end of the series.
