Historical Information

The Northeast Consortium Research Fleet (NECOR) was established in July 1981, when the Directors of the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution signed an agreement to coordinate the operations of their UNOLS research vessels. The objectives of the agreement were to improve availability of the fleet through coordinated scheduling, to permit a larger degree of specialization of some ships in the fleet, to avoid duplication and gain savings by sharing responsibility for the operation of specialized facilities, and to achieve more economical operation of vessels through pooled inventories, standardization of equipment, joint planning of equipment replacement, and sharing of technical support personnel.

Several standing and ad hoc committees and subcommittes were formed under NECOR, including the Submersible/ROV Subcommittee, Ship Scheduling Committee, Winch and Wire Committee, MCS (Multichannel Seismic Subcommittee), SEABEAM Committee, Navigation Committee, and Diving Committee.
