Scope and Content Note

This collection includes the records of the Marine Operations Administrators and other general files not specifically associated with its two major subdivisions, the Ship Operations Group (AC-49) and the Operational Sciences Service Group (AC-18). Specifically represented here are files from George D. Grice, Associate Director for Science Operations; Bob Dinsmore, Executive Secretary of UNOLS and Chairman of Facilities and Marine Operations; George Cadwalader, Construction Supervisor and Marine Policy Coordinator; Richard F. Pittenger, Associate Director of Marine Operations; Richard Edwards, Marine Superintendant; and Dave Casiles, Captain of Oceanus and Assistant Marine Operations Manager.

Also included are Accessions 2008-28 and 2009-21. Original order for both accessions can not be determined, and further processing is necessary. A folder list for both accessions is included after the last processed series.

Historical Information

The Acting Vice President for Marine Facilities and Operations oversees the Ship Operations Group, Shipboard Scientific Services Group (SSSG), Deep Submergence Operations, and the Center for Ocean, Seafloor, and Marine Observing Systems. Responsibilities of the Marine Operations Office include oversight for WHOI's vessels, vehicles, and observatories as well as the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF), cruise scheduling, cruise planning, outfitting ships, liaisons with Federal agencies, and ship budgets.

Separated Material

Oversized drawings and plans were removed and placed in the map cabinets in the back. Photographs were removed and placed in the files drawers in the climate controlled archives vault. Audiovisual materials were removed and placed in the climate controlled film vault.
