Nelson G. Hogg papers
Scope and Content Note
The Nelson G. Hogg Papers span the years of 1940-2002, with the bulk dating from 1972-2002. A large part of the collection is correspondence concerning Hogg's work with NIO, World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), and the Deep Basin Experiment (DBE), as well as correspondence concerning the development, nomination, and presentation of the inaugural Henry Stommel Medal to John Swallow. Also included are a variety of cruise logs and datasheets, publications, and a rough draft of Henry Stommel's The Sea of the Beholder. The papers were received by the WHOI Data Library and Archives from Nelson G. Hogg in 2006.

Biographical Information
Nelson Hogg received his B.S. in Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1967. From 1967 to 1971, he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, MIT. He received his PhD in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from MIT/WHOI in 1971.
In 1971, he received a post-doctoral fellowship to the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Great Britain), then called the National Institute of Oceanography of Great Britain(NIO). He returned to the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT in 1972.
In 1973, he became an Assistant Scientist at WHOI where he continued to work. In 1997, he was named to the W. Van Alan Clark, Jr., Senior Scientist Chair.
He continues to work as a senior scientist in the Department of Physical Oceanography. His research interests are as follows: the general circulation with special emphasis on the deep flow beneath the thermocline; dynamics of low frequency motions and their relation to the mean circulation; effects of topography, wave motions, and mixing processes on abyssal flows.

Overview
The Nelson G. Hogg papers consists of materials from 1940-2002, with the bulk dating from 1972-2002, documenting Hogg's work at MIT, NIO, and WHOI. Also included are papers generated by Henry Stommel including a draft of The Sea of the Beholder. The collection, divided into four series, consists of correspondence, publications, cruise logs and datasets, and Henry Stommel's manuscript of The Sea of the Beholder.

Custodial History
The custodial history of the papers is undocumented.
Acquisitions Information
Nelson G. Hogg donated the manuscripts in 2006. The accession was numbered as acc2006-41.
Separated Material
Several issues of Oceanus and some duplicate materials were removed.
Processing Information
Processed by Nathaniel Janick. Six boxes were received in December 2006, and after books were either added to the collection or recycled, three boxes of archival materials remained. These three boxes were consolidated to two during processing when materials were removed from binders and folders. Folders were rearranged chronologically and according to series, but the content of the folders remains in the existing order. During processing, basic preservation measures were performed, staples and paper clips were removed.
