Biographical Information

Thomas R. Stetson worked at WHOI from the 1960's to the 1980's. He served as the WHOI-UNOLS Executive Secretary, worked in the Geology and Geophysics department, and was part of the Ocean Industries Program.

In November 1958, he was part of an International Geophsyical Year project in the Arctic that was stranded on an ice floe for nearly a week before being rescued. Newspaper articles concerning the rescue can be found in Stetson's biographical file in the WHOI Data Library and Archives.

Overview

The Thomas R. Stetson papers consist of materials from 1957-1988. The collection, which is divided into four series, consists of articles, manifest records, publications, correspondence, other papers, and photographs. Also included is a photo album by Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment of the U.K. and collected correspondence from Stetson's tenure as executive director of University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS).

The custodial history of the papers is undocumented.

Acquisitions Information

Thomas R. Stetson initially donated materials in 2005. The accession was numbered as acc2005-01. Throughout the years, Stetson continued to donate more papers and photographic materials in 2010 and 2012.

Related Material

Oral history materials are available in the WHOI Data Library and Archives. Four interviews were conducted in 2002 and 2003 by Frank Taylor. The interviews consist of five audio cassettes and three DVDs.

Separated Material

Photographs have been removed and placed in the photograph collection in the archives vault. Locations, when known, are listed in the Photographs series. Some duplicate material was removed and discarded.

Processing Information

Processing completed by Nathaniel Janick in November 2012. Folders were rearranged chronologically and according to series. The folder labelled Manifests was rearranged alphabetically according to the name of ship or expedition and then arranged chronologically within these groups. The Partial History of UNOLS series was rearranged by subject before arranging it chronologically. During processing, staples and other metal objects were removed as basic preservation measures.
