Biographical Information
Thomas Nathan Kelley was born in Boston in 1901. He came to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1933, and served as the first mate on the Atlantis from 1933 until 1942, when he joined the Coast Guard.
Following the War, he served as military consul in Trieste until 1947, then returned to the United States where he was assigned to the marine inspection office at the Coast Guard headquarters in Philadelphia, then headed the marine inspection office in New London, CT from 1953 to 1958. In 1958 he was assigned to the Office of Merchant Marine Safety in Washington, D.C., where he remained until his retirement from the Coast Guard. Thomas Kelley died in Tampa, FL in November 19, 1986.

Betty Fiester, daughter of Thomas Kelley, gave the material to Homer P. Smith for donation to the WHOI Archives.
Acquisitions Information
Homer P. Smith gave the material to WHOI in March 1987, as accessions 87-3, 87-4, 87-5, and 87-7.
