Oceanography: The Making of a Science, 2000

The series consists of videotapes and transcripts documenting a program sponsored by the Office of Naval Research in cooperation with the H. John Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment to commemorate the history of the Office of Naval Research and Oceanography. The program, titled Oceanography: The Making of a Science, consisted of five regional and one national colloquia held from January through March 2000 and featured presentations on historical and contemporary topics in oceanography. The regional colloquia were held at the University of Washington (tapes 1-12); the University of Miami (tapes 13-17 and 22-31); Scripps Institution of Oceanography (tapes 32-58); Texas A&M University (tapes 59-70); and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (tapes 18-21 and 88-109). The national colloquia was held at the U.S. Senate Hart Building in Washington, D.C. (tapes 75-78) The videotapes consists of interviews of leading oceanographers and scholars produced as the oral history component of the colloquia.
