Biographical Information

Dr. Bostwick H. Ketchum, Senior Scientist Emeritus, was associated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for more than four decades. He started out at the institution as a graduate student fellow during the summers of 1935 through 1937. He then went on to serve as Associate Marine Biologist (1940-45), Marine Microbiologist (1945-53), Senior Biologist (1953-54), Senior Oceanographer (1954-63), Senior Scientist (1963-77), and Associate Director (1962-77). He was also Lecturer in Biological Oceanography at Harvard University (1960-68) and an Associate Member of the Department of Biology (1968-71). While on leave of absence from 1968-69, he served as Head of the Section on Ecology and Systematic Biology of the National Science Foundation. He is considered a major figure in oceanographic research, particularly as a leader of a group of scientists in Woods Hole whose pioneering research provided the basis for the present understanding of the productivity of the oceans. In his after years, he also turned his attention to the increasing problems of the coastal zone.
