Biographical Information

Andrew F. Bunker was a meteorologist in the department of Physical Oceanography at WHOI. He began employment at the Institution on June 10, 1946, as a Research Associate working with Dr. Wyman and Dr. B. Haurwitz on Project B-25. Bunker had a B.A. in astronomy from Ohio Wesleyan University, and a Master's degree in astrophysics from the University of Toronto.

In 1941, Bunker was employed by the University of Chicago at the McDonald Observatory and worked the night shift at the Dunlap Observatory with the responsibility of manning the 74-inch reflecting telescope. His early meteorology training was gained while in the U.S. Army as a Captain, forecasting weather on flights for bombing missions. In October 1950, the Executive Committee appointed Bunker a Marine Meteorologist. Much of the work of the Meteorology Group at Woods Hole centered around the programs of Bunker and Joanne Malkus Simpson. Several large expeditions both sea going and air borne were organized, planned and carried out by this group, including an extensive program in the Pacific. He was appointed to the Scientific Staff as an Associate Scientist on September 1, 1963. Over the years, his research studies covered atmospheric turbulence and diffusion of heat, water vapor and momentum over the oceans, modification of air masses, and cloud distribution. He authored or co-authored some 26 publications in astrophysics and meteorology.

Andrew Bunker died August 28, 1979 in Boston.
