Historical Information

The earliest records seem to indicate that in 1949 or 1950 Henry Stommel organized a “ Physical Oceanography Journal Club” which met weekly at 4pm for lectures on a wide variety of subjects, all more or less bearing upon the general domain of Physical Oceanography. It was reorganized in 1954 by Stommel and John Ryther as “Staff Meeting” with evening meetings and then reorganized again in 1958 by John Zeigler as “ Journal Club”.
