Pre-Dive Checklists, 1965-2009

 Series

Scope and Content Note

NOTE: It is legally required that all predive checklists be kept. At no time may they be destroyed.

This series begins with Dive 91 and except for the omissions of Dives 92, 346, 463 and 464, 610, continues through Dive 4514. Some early dives have only one sheet of information, but, by 1968, four forms were usually included for each dive: the "Submarine Compensation Computation," the " Alvin Predive Checklist" (which included three parts); a "Debriefing" form and "Post-Dive Checklist." Occasionally other information, such as plotting sheets was included; sometimes computations or other information were written on the folder. Also included in the series are some three, six and twelve month maintenance checklists, and pre- and post-cruise checklists.

Processing Information

When processing Boxes 27-40, the forms were removed from their individual folders, which were in poor condition. Staples were removed and any information written on the folders was copied onto archival quality paper. Dive numbers were added in pencil on the upper right hand corner if necessary. Dives were organized with approximately 5 per folder.

Boxes 60-70 were re-housed in acid-free cartons; the original folders were retained.
