The papers consist largely of Berggren's correspondence, dating from 1970-1998. Also included in the papers are materials from seminars, symposia, and projects that Berggren worked on while at WHOI.

William Berggren, a micropaleontologist in the Geology and Geophysics Department, came to the WHOI in 1965, and became a senior scientist in 1971. He received his B.A. from Dickinson College in 1952, his M.Sc. from the Universiy of Houston in 1957, and his Ph.D. (1960) and D.Sc. (1962) from the University of Stockholm.

The papers were donated in two accessions (acc.1999-04 and acc.2003-27) by William Berggren.
