Biographical Information
Arthur Eugene Maxwell was born in 1925. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he received a B.S. in Physics from New Mexico State University, and his M.S. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1952. While working on his Ph.D., Maxwell started working for the Office of Naval Research in Washington, D.C. He received his Ph.D. in 1959. In 1964 he was awarded the Distinguished Civilian Service Award by the Secretary of the Navy. In 1965 Maxwell left the ONR for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where he was Senior Scientist and Associate Director until 1981. In 1982 he left WHOI to become the first Director of the Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas at Austin. He remained there until his retirement in 1994.
