This collection consists almost entirely of programs, correspondence, and notices, with the exception of information on a survey that was done in 1981 in an attempt to revitalize the program.

Historical Information

The earliest records seem to indicate that in 1949 or 1950 Henry Stommel organized a “ Physical Oceanography Journal Club” which met weekly at 4pm for lectures on a wide variety of subjects, all more or less bearing upon the general domain of Physical Oceanography. It was reorganized in 1954 by Stommel and John Ryther as “Staff Meeting” with evening meetings and then reorganized again in 1958 by John Zeigler as “ Journal Club”.

The custodial history of the records is undocumented.

Acquisitions Information

The records were transferred to the Archives in several accessions, including acc. 83-2, which included Club records from 1949-1980.
