The Computer and Information Services office started out in the mid 1960’s as the Information Processing Center (IPC). It was reorganized as the Information Processing and Communications Laboratory (IPCL) in the early 90’s, then it was changed again to the Information Systems Center (ISC) in 1992(?). In 1994 it was renamed to its current incarnation as Computer and Information Services (CIS).
Computer and Information Services acts as a central resource pool of technical expertise to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's employees. It is structured by support function into a half-dozen units, which serve primarily as conduits of technical and organizational information.
