The series contains correspondence between Bigelow and people significant to the emerging institution, primarily scientists. Most of the correspondence between Bigelow and the Treasurer of the Institution, Lawrason Riggs, is of a financial nature (box 2, ff.5-16; box 6, f.30). There is noteworthy correspondence from Columbus Iselin regarding early cruises of the Atlantis (box 1, ff. 44-45) and from A. E. Parr on the Bingham Oceanographic Foundation’s joint cruise (box 2, f.1). Correspondence with Alfred Redfield gives details on the scientist’s advice to Bigelow on the founding of an oceanographic institution and on his decision to come to the Institution, as well as administrative and scientific points that they discussed while working together (box 2, f.2). General correspondence to and from other individuals is organized into alphabetical files. The series also contains photographs and newspaper clippings.
