Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

This large series documents activities both internal to, and outside of the Institution. Materials consist of correspondence, grants, minutes, memoranda, bulletins, notes, reports, magazine articles, and newspaper clippings. Records span the years 1951 to 1978, with the bulk ranging from 1954 to1977. The records contain information relating to government agencies and offices; US Senate and House of Representatives; corporations and foundations; committees; academic institutions; scientific organizations and institutions; WHOI property, ships, expeditions, and department administration; grants; personnel; and community relations. An audiocassette tape of a telephone conversation with Essam Shackh Seddah, Saudia Arabia, on Feb. 3 1976, was removed from the series and placed in the film vault (box 81, f. 19).

The series includes files of National Science Foundation (NSF) grants (box 20 ff.10-35). Also included are letters from Roger Revelle, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, to WHOI directors Iselin and Fye (box 23, f.3), and numerous files about large oceanographic programs, panels, projects, and committees, which proliferated in the 1960s. The first of these joint ventures, the International Geophysical Year (IGY), took place in the mid-1950s during Columbus Iselin’s tenure (box 21, ff. 42). The series also contains numerous files on the International Oceanographic Congress (IOC); the Interagency Committee on Oceanography-US (ICO); the International Committee on Oceanography; the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE); the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Oceanography (NASCO); the Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling Program (JOIDES); the Council of Laboratory Directors (COLD); and Geochemical Ocean Sections Study (GEOSECS).
